Description

And suddenly the desert
Medina, kasbah, souks, beaches but also palm groves, desert, majestic dunes and miraculous oases - Morocco is as plural as it is fascinating, as coastal as it is desert, as touristy as it is authentic. This breakaway reveals here the Saharan facet of the country, starting with Ait Ben Haddou, which is reached by a road that winds through the Atlas mountains. This fortified village not far from Ouarzazate looks like an Almoravid caravanserai. Film buffs will surely recognize a few decorative elements, since this astonishing kasbah of red bricks has been used for many works, like Lawrence of Arabia. Then drive to Zagora, nestled in a palm grove that stretches endlessly. Then, we leave civilization there as we know it, to sink into the mythical Sahara. On the program: a night of bivouac and a day in the dunes of Chegaga. It is in the midst of these lunar landscapes that a camel ride is planned. At the swaying rhythm of the dromedary, you savor the silence that surrounds you. So that logistical questions do not disturb your moments of contemplation - and there will be many - your trips are made by private 4x4 with driver. You can follow the route using the GPS in your mobile application, where your addresses and the coordinates of our on-site French concierge are loaded - in case a last minute desire arises during the trip.

DAY 1 : Flight to Marrakech - Ait Ben Haddou

International flight with priority passage of formalities at the airport. You are met by your private driver and set off in a 4x4 to take on the Tizi n'Tichka pass, which rises to over 2,200 meters. The road immerses you directly in the ocher beauty of the landscapes of the region. Installation for the night near the fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou, in an address with great charm, a pretty riad with only a few rooms. Crafts alongside modern art, and soft Berber carpets warm the stone floors. The thick walls keep the interior cool in summer. From the roof terrace, the eye takes in a panoramic view of the Ksar. A pretty swimming pool awaits dusty travelers in a profusion of laurels in bloom.
To see and do - Visit the village, an extraordinary example of traditional pre-Saharan architecture, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site - go to Ouarzazate for its Cinema Museum, which pays homage to the love story uniting the seventh art in the Moroccan city - get lost in the souk until you find the spice stalls - have a drink on the terrace, at sunset ...

DAY 2 : Ait Ben Haddou - Zagora

Head southeast towards Zagora. As you get closer to the Draâ valley, the desert plateaus, oases and traditional villages follow one another. The city of Zagora nestles in the Draa palm grove, the largest in the world. A true oasis at the door of the desert. Far from being a simple forest, the palm grove has its own life. By taking the small paths drawn between the trees, you will discover the date culture which occupies a large part of the premises daily. Busy workers perched on a donkey or a moped, idle and smiling children, Zagora also reveals itself through its inhabitants.
Night in the heart of a small green setting, where a refined guest house is nestled. You cool off in the swimming pool, or indulge in a nap under the protective shade of palm trees.
To see, to do - The museum of arts and traditions of the Draâ valley, which testifies to the vital role that the river plays in these desert lands - the Ksar of Amezrou, a fortified village of the 18th century - the Jebel Zagora and its superb view of the valley ...

DAY 3 : Zagora - Chegaga Dunes

You leave Zagora leaving the famous sign "Tombouctou: 52 jours" behind you. Head for the Chegaga dunes, by road first, then by a sandy track. Night in a camp with a romantic atmosphere, between colonial reminiscences and unexpected comfort. Your tent is a small cocoon of softness: a small living room in front of the entrance, bedside lamps as a detail of delicacy, all enhanced by powdery shades. A decor that fits harmoniously into the desert where you dine under the stars, in the flickering light of the candles. Unforgettable.
Optional - On the Chegaga dune road, a picnic in the shelter of an oasis.

On the program - A camel ride on camels in the middle of the dunes. On the ridges of these giant sand strutted by nomads since the dawn of time, you advance to the rhythm of the swaying step of your mount. Before our eyes is spread a sea of sands with silky waves undulating. Faced with these ocher vastnesses, one feels infinitely small, isolated, and it is infinitely beautiful.
To see and do - Climb one of the highest dunes and revel in the 360 ° panorama - arm yourself with a surfboard to be the first at the bottom - take advantage of the knowledge of the camel driver guide about the animals and the desert ...

Later, drive to Zagora, where we find our pretty lodge with swimming pool for one night. Farewell desert, solar dunes and dromedaries. Or was it a mirage?

A picnic on the Chegaga dune route

The road is sometimes long in the desert areas. This is why we are organizing a picnic break for you in the cool of an oasis between Zagora and the Chegaga dunes. On the menu: refreshments, salads and grills. A friendly moment before hitting the road for the camp.
