Meknes is located on the west side of the city, on elevated ground separated from the new city by the Bufeklane River. It is surrounded by impressive walls and has several gates. The most famous and impressive is Bab Verdain in the north. In the Medina, El Hedim stands out. There you will find the beautifully tiled Bab El Mansour gate, built by Moulay Ismail in the 18th century. Next to it is the fortress of Dar el Beida, the military school, and the museum. This square is the heart of the old city and is full of cafes, restaurants, and shops. It is a gathering place for the locals, and various performances are sometimes organized there, attracting many tourists. There is also the souk, with various offices for dyers, basket weavers, blacksmiths, and tailors. It adjoins the Great Mosque, the largest religious building of the Almoravid city, built in the 12th century and renovated in the 14th century.
Don't forget to visit the Bou Inania Medersa near the Great Mosque. It is the most impressive monument in the city due to its beauty and antiquity. Built in the 14th century, the courtyard is worth a visit.
Surrounded by a 40-kilometer wall built by Sultan Moulay Ismail, it has three enclosures. The Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail is remarkable. It is a tomb in a mosque, full of decoration with several rooms and courtyards.
